Becoming a new parent is exciting and overwhelming all at the same time, and when you become a first-time parent you may want to buy everything that’s on the market, after all, your child deserves the best, and if there is a time to buy, it’s now.
In this list, I want to share with you the top things that I use and have found truly useful as a first-time parent. Honestly, you don’t need to go crazy buying a lot of stuff because most of the things you end up buying or getting as gifts you won’t use.
WATERPROOF SILICONE BIBS
These are a must-have! I ended up buying a bunch of cute bandana bibs for my baby when he was born because they are so darn cute but not practical at all. So instead I use them just for fashion but my to go bib are these waterproof silicone bibs you can get them from Amazon. Honestly, you don’t need more than two bibs. One for the house and one in your diaper bag for outings.
These are a life and time saver since they’re made of silicone it’s so easy to clean up, just run them under water or you can even put them in your dishwasher and done plus they are super cute.
I love these wipes they are perfect to clean up a messy face after eating. They are natural, soft and wet to keep your baby’s nose protected when they have a cold, and you need to clean their snot continuously. I also love the packaging because it’s compact and easy to open so you can take it with you on the go. I highly recommend these Boogies Wipes for your little one.
It’s obvious you will need diaper rash cream for your little baby’s bottom. But with so many options out there I want to share with you the one I like and use the most for my baby. I’ve tried a few different ones but my to go to is Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm I’ve found this balm to be good in helping my baby with his rash, a little goes a long way. I like the texture of it how it goes on smooth on the baby skin.
PLAYMAT | PLAYGYM
Having a playmat is essential this is where your baby gets to spend time playing, looking at colors and gives you, the mommy, a break long enough to do your makeup, make breakfast or go the bathroom. The Playmat I have found to be the best and most entertaining for my son has been the Fisher Price Kick and Play Piano Gym I got mine from Amazon. I would recommend placing the mat on a cushioning surface or what I did, was use another playmat that was bigger and was gifted to me and I placed this kick and play on top of it for more cushion. My son started using this playmat at two months and he’s already seven months and still loves it, the only difference now is he rather sit and play on it they lay down.
Fisher Price Rock and Play
I found this piece to be instrumental in putting my baby to sleep as well as having somewhere to place him when I was in bed watching TV. All my friends recommend me this after I had already bought the expensive ass MAMAROO that I so wanted for my son. But as life would have it, he could have cared less about it; some babies love the MAMAROO, and others don’t. Unfortunately, my son didn’t care for it and barely used it unlike the Fisher Price Rock and Play that he loved and took many naps and even slept in it throughout the night. Plus if your looking for a good bargain this Rock and Play will cost you around fifty-something dollars compared to two hundred and something for the MAMAROO.
MUSLIN COTTON SWADDLE BLANKETS
I love these swaddle blankets, and I own nine of them, these are great if your baby likes to be swaddled although my son did not want to be swaddled, and so I don’t use these blankets for that purpose. But they are great for so many things. I use it primarily as a burping cloth because it’s big enough and soft to place on yourself for spit up and vomit. I use them to cover his car seat when we go for a stroll, and it helps with the sun and for privacy. I’ve also used it for breastfeeding and so on… These blankets have a range of purposes. I always have on of these cotton swaddle blankets hung in his room near my rocking chair, and another one hung on my wall next to my bed and one in the diaper bag.
Nursing Breastfeeding Scarf
If you breastfeed, I have found this nursing scarf extremely useful for breastfeeding in public. You could use the muslin swaddle blankets as well but honestly, I found this scarf to be more useful regarding privacy and when you need to pull out your boob quickly in public. If I’m sitting at a restaurant and need to feed my son, I just place the scarf over my shirt and the scarf sits on you like a long tube top, it allows me to quickly remove my top discretely and put my son under it for feeding.
Changing Table Wetness Protection
I have a cute animal cover on my son’s changing pad, however, I discovered early on two different solutions to eliminate the hassle of having to constantly change and/or clean the changing pads the main cover. I found that adding a layer of waterproof protection to your plush changing pad cover is ideal because when it gets dirty I simply throw in his laundry basket and pull out a fresh one. I have found this Bamboo Waterproof Liners from Amazon to work the best. I’ve also used these disposal liners ones and they also worked great.
FISHER PRICE JUMPER
When my son turned 4 months I was looking for something that would entertain him for a bit longer, so I decide to purchase a jumper for him and it was a great investment because he loves his jungle jumper and as he’s gotten older he manages to stay on it longer. When he started using it at four months he would use it for 3-5 mins at a time and once he turned 5 in half months he’d stay in the jumper for almost 15 minutes and when he was done, he was exhausted and ready for a long nap! This Fisher Price Jungle Jumper is the one I bought for my son and I am very happy with it. You can look at other ones but I do believe having a jumper is a good investment to help your child’s development, it entertains them and wears them out for you. I usually put my son in the Jumper in the morning and sometimes at night before bed to tire him out.
Teething what a fun experience, yeah right. These are the three things I have found useful in helping calm my son during teething. The Nuby Icybite Hard/Soft Teething Keys, I keep these keys in the freezer for him, they are both soft and hard plus they are cold. You get all three effects from one product, I bought two keys to also have one in the freezer for when he is using one, there is another ready for him if needed. I also love this one Fresh Food Fruit Feeder Silicone Pacifier Pouch You put frozen fruits inside like banana, pineapple, etc and then baby can chew on them. This one keeps them busy for a while as they suck and enjoy a yummy treat.
Dock A ToT
Okay so this one isn’t a necessity per say and it is pretty pricey. I originally bought it with the idea to use it in bed when we watched TV or for co-sleeping when necessary and this way I would feel safe having him in our bed. My Son has loved his Dock A Tot which we call his boat. The best use I’ve gotten out of it was using it inside his crib for him to sleep in. I had my son sleeping in his own crib at two weeks old but I found the crib to be too big and spacious for him at only two weeks old he didn’t feel secure and snuggled but with the Dock A ToT, he was snugged and secure in it and it allowed him to sleep in his crib, in his own room early on. I will say that Dock A Tot doesn’t recommend you using it in a crib without supervision ( I’m assuming they say that for liability reason) but personally I’ve used it with him since he was two weeks old.
